Cruise Ship Drink Packages – Are they worth It?

Beverage Packages

There is a lot of debate on whether getting a beverage package is worth it. Firstly, other than the limited included drinks we mentioned earlier, soda, alcohol and specialty coffees are not included in your cruise price. Beverage packages have become very popular and include a wide variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for one set price. The question of is it worth it, really comes down to an individual’s drinking habits. There’s no disputing that drink purchases on cruise ships can add up very quickly. Not only are prices high, but they’ll be an additional service charge of 15-18% added to every drink. Drink packages are priced per day and you must purchase one for the entire cruise. This means that the longer the cruise, the more expensive the drink package.

Here’s some guidance before purchasing a beverage package.

The number of sea days and days in port is a very important thing to take note of. It is very likely that on days in port you will not be consuming as many drinks. Therefore, on a port intensive itinerary, such as in the Mediterranean, the value of a package may not be to your advantage when you factor in the missed opportunities for consuming drinks while off the ship. One thing to note, if your cruise visits a private island, your drink package may be accepted while ashore, so this would count like another day on the ship.

Another factor to consider is your tolerance to drink the same amount every day for the duration of your cruise. On short cruises of 3-4 nights, many people would have no problem maintaining a high level of consumption of alcoholic beverages. While on a longer cruise of a week or more, the consumption is likely to catch up with you at some point.

Drink packages also generally include some rather costly non-alcoholic beverages like premium coffees and teas, bottled water and fresh juices. If you regularly drink these types of beverages in addition to wine, beer or cocktails, then there may be even more value in a beverage package for you.

Lastly, since cruise lines have been offering discounts if you pre-purchase a beverage package before your cruise, it may help in your decision to know in advance how much the drinks you like will cost you onboard. Onboard drink menus with pricing are readily available online from many sources or you can ask your booking agent.
